Broadband

What is Broadband?

Broadband is the common term for a high bandwidth Internet connection. Broadband services are capable of transmitting data at much faster rates than a standard modem connection. A Broadband Internet connection is 'always on' - you don't need to dial-up every time you want to 'log on'. This means no more engaged tones, no screeching noises from your modem and no delays.

Most Internet users would like to improve the speed of their connection. On a standard modem Internet connection e-mails with large file attachments and graphic intensive Web sites can take ages to download. Viewing video on the Web, or listening to music can also prove problematic. A Broadband connection can improve all of these and will allow you to use the Internet in an completely different way.

Broadband can be delivered via a number of different technologies:

ADSL has made Broadband available to smaller organisations and consumers. ADSL transforms an existing BT telephone line into a high-speed digital line capable of carrying data at up to 40 times the speed of a conventional modem.

ADSL has several key advantages over a standard Internet connection:

Kingston St Mary and Broadband

The Exchange
To receive Broadband ADSL the Kingston St Mary exchange needs to be enabled for ADSL.

BT announced on 4th February 2004 that the Kingston St Mary exchange will be enabled for Broadband.
